Success can be scary too

A friend of mine just got an acquisition offer from one of the big players in his industry. He’s built his software business over the last 20 years and despite the fact that a lot of dedication has gone into it, he’s always seen it as just a stepping stone to bigger, better things.

The offer is very good and will allow him to pursue whatever he wants without any financial worries. However, letting go of his business, which he’s always seen as a source of stability, scares him greatly. He has some brilliant ideas as to how to put his time to better use and truly for the greater good and knowing him, I’m sure he will do amazing things. But he’s ‘stuck’ now after having worked so hard towards this very moment.

The situation he’s in made me think of the ability to let go and give into life’s rhythm of change – so natural but also so difficult for all of us. But it also reminded me of a quote from Maya Angelou that I come across often: “Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.”

What do you think?
